Mary Magdalene, or Mary of Magdala, is a figure in Christianity. According to the Bible, Mary traveled with Jesus as one of his followers. Mary had a sister named Martha. She is said to have witnessed Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. She is named 12 times in the four Gospels, more than most of the Apostles. The original name for Santa Maria Maddalena in Assisi was San Lazzaro d'Arce. This leper hospice was named after the leper Lazarus and later after another despised person from the gospels, Mary Magdalene. On this site a hospital once existed for the care of lepers. The chapel is all that remains today. The Baroque artist, Annibale Carracci, did an oil painting (1602) of St. Francis of Assisi and Mary Magdalene and the Pieta. This art is in the Louvre, Paris, France.
